We invite you to join us and discover the mysteries of Lisbon in the 18th century: 35 arches, 7 kings, 5 architects, 1 murderer… while learning about the importance of fresh water supply to Lisbon and how it was solved with a complex system of tunnels, cisterns and fountains, all fed by an aqueduct.
Along the way we will be able to see some of the few “Villas” from the 19th and 20th centuries industrial period that still exist.

The water distribution tour starts at the beautiful São Pedro de Alcântara belvedere, overlooking the typical red tile roofs of old Lisbon centre. From here, we find our way up to the busy crowded Lisbon streets of the historic Principe Real neighborhood.
The next stop will be at the “Mãe d’Água”, also known as the Water Cathedral, a huge baroque and neoclassical water cistern, a demonstration of the importance of fresh water for the 18th century Lisbon society.
Leaving the Water Cathedral behind we follow the water path walking through the ancient industrial neighborhood of Campolide, catching a sneak peek into some of its “Vilas”.
While learning about the history and the stories behind the water distribution system in Lisbon, we arrive to the impressive Águas Livres Aqueduct, from where we enjoy the breathtaking views from both pathways, overlooking Alcântara valley.
