Coimbra, the Portugal’s previous capital city for around 100 years, is known for its monuments and historical treasures and is home to one of the oldest universities in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Divided into an upper and lower town, Coimbra, the students city with centuries of culture and history, is set in the amazing landscape of the eastern bank of the Mondego River, with its steep and winding alleys that hide students romantic stories that are translated into haunting metallic notes of the Portuguese guitar and the deep voices of “Student’s Fado”.

We begin our tour with a visit to the “Portugal dos Pequenitos”, a popular thematic park, displaying scale models of Portuguese monuments, traditional houses and buildings that portray the aesthetics of different parts of the country and also of Portuguese-speaking countries, such as Angola, Macau and Brazil.
Our tour continues to one of the oldest churches in Portugal, with a beautiful tile panel, an imposing organ and an altar full of magnificent details, a resting place of two of our early kings.
A small break for lunch before the walk continues along the medieval alleyways.

Coimbra’s high point is the magnificent and prestigious University at the top of the hill. Here we will have the opportunity to visit the amazing and unique Biblioteca Joanina (Library), a baroque masterpiece of the 18th century, the São Miguel Chapel, the Schools’ Square, the Students Prison and the Exam Room.
