We invite you to join this tour and discover the mysteries of the powerful religious and military Templar Order by visiting the Templar Knights heritage town, Tomar, the most important place of the Templar history in the western world since it has preserved an imposing castle and convent, almost intact.
The Military Order of the Temple was founded in France, in the Champagne region, in the year 1118 and became one of the most popular military orders of Medieval Christian Europe, created to protect the pilgrimage movement to the Holy Places of Christianity in the Middle East. Known as warrior monks, the Templars helped the first Portuguese kings to conquer land to the Moors and settle the foundation of Portugal as a country.

We begin our tour with a small river cruise to discover the amazing and unique 12th-century Almourol Castle, full of history, built on the top of a small island in the middle of the Tejo river and from its towers we can enjoy an astonishing landscape. If the weather conditions do not allow to reach Almourol island, the visit to the castle will be replaced by a visit to the Templar Interpretation Center nearby.
We will continue our tour to Constância, also called as the “Poem Village” honouring the 16th century residence of the greatest portuguese poet Luís de Camões. There you can enjoy the natural beauty of this historic and charming riverside village.
Arriving in Tomar you will have approximately one-hour break for lunch.
We will visit the 12th century Castle and the magnificent Convent of Christ, the Templar Order’s headquarters in Portugal until the XIV century and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1983.
Along our walk we will tour through the historic centre of this beautiful town, passing by the old Jewish Quarter and stop at the oldest Synagogue in Portugal. This temple was commissioned by Henry the navigator for whom the Jewish community financed most of the Discoveries project in the 15th-century.
In the outskirts of Tomar lies this fabulous 17th Century construction, our final stop and an opportunity for some extraordinary pictures.
